Republic trauma

January 26, 2024

It’s a pretty scene. All students lined up to see the flag hoisting.

But this scene wasn’t very encouraging back in my childhood. As I was sketching this, the ache that was in my heart was all the times the scrawny or dark skinned children were never picked for any function.

Yes, I was a skinny dark skinned child. Not picked up for anything wasn’t fun. It made me feel ugly and I am sure many who were the same, felt so.

I feel the role of teachers in propagating “fair skin equals beautiful” is underrated. We need a revision of their syllabus, teaching potential teachers to be not discriminative and maybe awareness campaigns on their impact on their students. Please don’t break the spirit of the upcoming generation.
